Finishing up one army, time to start another!

posted Jan 21, 2012 16:59:54 by noah.nathanson
So, I blitzed through finishing up my 2500 points of beastmen for the Conflict GT that I attended with Greg and Jen. I'm going to continue to try and touch it up, add a couple of washes, do some free hand on the banners (it can't look worse than a one color banner, right?), etc. I'll start posting up pics here was things get worked on. I'm also working on painting terrain which will come up here as well.

I'm starting a new army, some Warriors of Chaos, and I could use a hand with the color scheme! It's going to have a strong Slaanesh theme, a daemon prince, lots of warhounds, and some chariots. Obviously a power army. I'm thinking of doing a lot of purple but other than that I'm lost on colors. I'm digging liche purple as a base color for the armor but I'm lost as to what colors go with purple. Heeeeeeeeelp!

Well generally any color works with white, black and/or gray. Bone/cream colors work with purple too and I've seen liche purple combined with bright blues to very good effect. Other than that I'm not exactly sure.

Purple + Bone = Awesome
Purple + Green = Awesome

Thanks guys! Leaning towards purple armor, dark green for the leather, dark green up to hawk turquoise for the fur on the cloaks, and a brownish cloak. Thinking maybe goldish weapons to bring some brightness. My beastmen are pretty dark, I'd like to brighten it up a bit. Also, thinking tentacles coming out of the shields for the fronk rank of the warriors. The gold on this sword is a bit chunky, still thinking of something other than bone color for the horns. This is right under a light, so its a bit brighter than usual and doesn't have anything other than a basecoat on it.

I like it! It looks suitably decadent (read: Slaanesh-y).

Tentacles coming out of the shields would be a nice touch. It could easily be achieved using bits from the Spawn kit or some light greenstuff work.

Sorry, but that's what it makes me think of!

Maybe once you highlight, it'll look less like the joker. Not that it's a bad thing anyway. I love that movie!

Actually Jen, that may be really helpful! I thought of orange, but it was too bright for me to get it working. Also, may trim the armor plates in gold which will hopefully help with the "flat" look of the armor plates since I really am not sure how to highlight those to unflatten them.

I wouldn't use too much gold on the core troops as this is typically a thing you could use to differentiate the more elite troops. Maybe just mix Liche Purple with Bleached Bone and paint on extreme highlights, usually works very good on armor. For some additional shading you could use Leviathan Purple.

Regarding the horns I would actually recommend bone color as it goes well with purple. I'm not an expert on color theory but I think, since you already have two "strong" colors (purple and green) you should stick to more neutral tones for the rest. (That is actually what that Joker picture should tell us, the gray hat and white face detract from the otherwise strong colors. Imagine his face was purple and his hat orange - you wouldn't know where to look.)

Hey, this shot is darker! So yeah, I don't really understand how to "highlight" and could use some tips. I'm trying to figure out where light would fall etc, but not sure with a chaos warrior if it'd look better in the middle of the armor plate or the edge. Thanks so much for the help already!

Wow, that pic REALLY sucks. I gotta stop taking photos on my phone in my living room.

Okay, so time for some hobby commitments here! For the beginning of March I'm looking to have put some freehand (my first attempts) on my beastmen banners, finish up a basecoat on a unit of chaos warriors, try to figure out highlighting them, and hopefully put together about 10 water features. Here we go!

I've been meaning to reply to your question about where/how to highlight the armor. I think it would be easier to explain in person. Are you up for some gaming and hobby chat on Sunday?

I've actually got a buddy I'm getting into the hobby coming over Sunday to paint, but I think I may be up Super Bowl Sunday if you're around. With armor I dunno about highlighting the edges which seems easier on the armor plates, but I dunno. Maybe I'll just keep building and base coating until I can get some professional opinions ;o). Definitely ready for some advice!

Okay, going to find my wife's camera and take some pics tomorrow of both the warriors and the water features WIP. I'm using warlock purple (don't know who would consider this purple and not pink) on a banner, it's the most watered down paint I think I've ever seen from GW! I think I'm 8 coats in. Pics to come tomorrow.

I hear you Noah. Some of those really thing colors are just difficult to work with. You end up having to glaze with them.

When I clicked on the picture it opened a new window with the image smaller and it looked much better that way.
