Friend is Starting Tomb Kings

posted Feb 13, 2012 04:56:14 by jake_hutton
My friend wants to start tomb kings, which I am happy about (there aren't enough TK players). He is most likely buying as much as possible off ebay, and asked me what he should get. I am going to try to convince him to play in a local escalation league which is starting at 1,000 points. What should I suggest he get? I know some of it is subject to personal preference, and I am going to suggest base his opinions more on look then anything else, but any tips for me to give to someone completely new to warhammer for starting a TK army? Also any beginner tips for playing them?

i know this is not probably the best beginner army, but my friend is studying Egyptology so the whole fluff aspect and look really appeals to him.

Well, you've got to start with the Core choices. I think the general opinion is that the Bowmen, Chariots, and Light Horsemen are good, whereas the regular Skeletons and Heavy Horsemen are bad. I like all of the choices, though. :-)

Yeah I quite like the Tomb Kings. What defines the heavy horse men versus the light? They are the same models right, just one has a shield and no fast calv I am guessing? Jen seemed to have a pretty sweet set up with regular skellie buffed by a prince of king, any major flaws with that? I guess if the buffing hero dies the unit gets much worse lol.

The Heavy Horsemen have spears and shields... I think they have Vanguard as well. The Light Horsemen have Bows and Scout. Really useful unit!

Having the regular Skeletons buffed with a character is nice, but as you said if the character dies then the unit is really easy to take out. It's a real fun unit to play with, though.

Yeah, I agree with Greg. Your friend will always find use for skeletons (archers if possible), chariots, and 1+ screaming skull catapult. Those models really won't go to waste. Picking up a liche priest or two will be useful. If he can find a cheap Khalida model it can easily be used as a liche priest or tomb prince/king.

k awesome. I figured I should suggest the war Spinx to right?

Yes! I would personally not recommend normal skellies but stick to archers. That's somewhat down to personal preference though. But do suggest sphinxes and snake cavalry, those are the best choices. I made Stalkers instead of Necro knights and I'm still kicking myself. The stalkers are extremely bad compared to the knights.
