Flying Doombull

posted Feb 14, 2012 05:33:35 by StephanHaver
Greg, Listened to your latest podcast and you mentioned that you wanted to take a flying Doombull. Well last year I attended Blood in the Sun with my Beastmen and a flying Doombull. Carpet, charmed shield, 4+ ward, heavy armour, Great weapon 362 ponts. He is a tru beast in battle. I had him up to 11 attacks in one game. I have included several pictures. He is flying around on a chunk of stone pillar (arcane ruins part)

Hey, Stephan, thanks for sharing!

The model looks really nice. I've been scratching my head trying to come up with a good conversion and I like the idea of a floating pillar. I may steal it. :-)

The setup I am currently running is Carpet, Sword of Battle, Dragonbane Gem, Ramhorn Helm, Gnarled Hide. Bouncing back attacks with a 1+ Armour Save is just gross! It's tough not having a Ward Save, but there are tricky ways to deal with the cannon shots.

I just thought that a Doombull was more fitting flying around on a giant broken stone chunk than a carpet. Would the carpet even hold his weight? I can imagine him sunk into the carpet halfway up his body turning it almost into a sack.

Hey, I played you at Blood in the Sun:)

Yes you did. Game 3 or 4 on the second day of the tournament table 23 or 24. You had and different Lizardman army than I am used to playing, lots of 6 man kroxigar units. Good game to. I charged my Doombull into
your 4 or 5 man Krox unit on turn five just to see what would happen, He died. Cost me the game but it was fun anyway.

How have you been doing? I see you will back at BITS. Matt Teeter and myself will be there as well.

Yeah, I will probably be running lizards again, but hopefully it will be a bit different than what you would normally see again:) There is a chance I might bring out a different army though.

Things are going alright in MN. I will be playing at Chad Hanson's Da Snotling 1000 in LaCrosse in a couple of weeks.

Grant has me listed as a Beastmen player but I am thinking of bringing the Daemons this year. I had a whole year of playing the Beast and needed a break, so currently I am playing Daemons in the GLWL here in Michigan.
Doing ok but everyone is bringing the filth and you either win big or lose big it seems. I have taken 2 losses so far against Ogres and Dark elves. Next up is High elves, Empire and then finaly Warriors with a 20 man block
of chosen with all the toys. Hoping for a better second half of the season.

Hooray for BiTS! Jen and I weren't sure if we would be able to go because the date is very close to the end of school for us. However, the lack of snow days this winter means we don't have to worry and should make it in plenty of time. :-)

Good deal...I mean since you already paid for the spot and all. BiTS is a great time. To me it felt like a family reunion even though I did not know anybody there.

Cool, it will be neat to see you guys in person.

Pun intended?

As far as gaming, how does this guy do? I mean, does he take a lot of flak (cannons, stonethrowers, etc.) and die a lot? Or does he make it into combat and rip some skulls?

I ran him today with the same setup Greg is pondering. He is a BAD A@# but can still lose to combat res if he rolls poor. Charged a unit of Khorne warriors 20 +/- size
with a unit of 6 minos. Did a lot of damage on the first turn but did not have any staying power. I forgot to roll the second row of attacks (just remembered about that)
and that would have helped. Second turn Fire belly charged in and tipped the tables on the combat res. Khorne warriors killed all but one mino and Doombull with one wound
on him lost combat by 4 rolled a 6 and broke from combat. Buy himself he might have fared better and getting in the flank might have helped. After running from combat he
never rallied and ran off the table. Cannons and morters will kill him fairly easy if you don't get into combat fast just like every other big creature in the game.

We did one on one combats against a fully tooled up chaos lord on a mount and it was a slug fest. Toe to toe for four rounds of combat and finally I fluffed my dice and he
hit good to take the last two wounds.

Lined up against a tooled up fire belly and pasted him even with a 4+ ward.

Changed the Doombulls stats for the next fight one carpet and heavy armour w/ 4+ ward then took on six chaos nights with all the toys and pasted them all without taking a
wound. We figured he could take on a unit of ten and still win fairly easy if you roll well.

I still think the ward save makes him more reliable in tough combats with characters but if you keep him for the squishy troops he will rock with any build. I would also watch
what supports him in combat as this can lead to his demise quicker than anything else. Other than that he is one of the best single lords in the game for just straight up fighting.

I agree with your analysis - you sometime don't want him to have any support. Fluffing the attack rolls can certainly spell his doom - Noah likes using the ASF Sword. With his I5 you get re-rolls against many opponents.
