Caleb Goes to the Dark Side

posted Aug 01, 2012 14:17:58 by CalebEdwards
I haven't given up on my Bret Plog, but with the advent of 6th edition, I thought I'd start painting some round-base models.

First up are the sisters of battle. Given their similarities to brettonians, I'm going to go with a very similar paint scheme (and hopefully use the general in both armies). Here are a couple test models (these pics were taken as the yellow glaze was drying, so they're a bit over shiney, I'm also planning to actually finish painting them ;))

My plan is for the rebreather tubes and some of the decorations to be green -- like the shields on my brets.

And then, because I wish to say "pew pew" lots, some tau. I only have one test guy, but I think the force is going to be red/black with yellow spot colours. This guy needs a lot of edge highlighting before he's close to done. (My goal is an army that's pretty quick to finish though).

I'd better not let Jen see this thread. She may force me to lock it out of principle. ;-)

How many points of each force are you looking to paint?

I guess up until I get bored. I have about 1200pts of each right now, so will start with that, then see if I want to do more.

Hey, I'm not dead... I've just been pretty busy. But I have had time to get a bit more of this evil 40k stuff painted. You might recognize the paint scheme from the brets I've been working on (i want to get a few things nailed down here, then go back to finish the bret's barding, etc).

Now, if you made it through that wall of text, the question is how to base them. I'd love to do something similar to my bret models because I think the blue looks amazing contrasted with the yellow, but it might be weird to have 40k models walking on water... Thoughts?

Maybe you could try a more traditional brown/earthy turf but add some puddles of water? Maybe build up around the puddle, paint it blue, then pour in some water effects.

Out of pure laziness, I think i'm either going to try to have them match my battle-board section (so desert-y) or match the board i'm making for the brets (so water-y)... I just haven't decided yet. Do you think they'd stand out enough if their bases matched the board their on now?

Also, more pics:

New Special Character/Missionary:

I'm terrible at eyes -- but I'm happy he at least looks "possessed" :D

A unit of battle sisters to seize objectives, etc:

Currently, they're led by the only sister smart enough to wear her helmet. Also, despite posing on the rhino, they may be giving up their ride to hug the baseline and let others steal it.

And a new unit of dominions:

And Celestine has decided to join the Seraphim:

Her eyes look more "possessed" and less washed out IRL, but it looks like I'll have to fix them.

And a diversion: These guys are just to get a fun marine paint scheme.

One unit of sisters (already painted) has moved to higher ground. They've lent their Rhino to a different squad (squad "purple")

And here's the new squad. I think the main idea will be that each unit has either red, yellow or purple guns. I was thinking that hazard stripes might also help identify the elite/fast/heavy units, but i'm not full sold on my strip abilities.

Okay, the last unit of battle sisters is mostly done, so the 1750pt army is together (except for finishing touches on the tanks and a few of the girls).

This is the whole force:

Here's the new squad; squad yellow:

And the Seraphim have hair colours now:

(I think i will make their guns purple though)

Lastly, one more missionary model for the force:

And then some extra guys who aren't really part of the army, but will join as necessary:

(thoughts on which of the missionary models I should use?)

I decided that the fleur-de-lys on the tanks would be purple to contrast with the yellow. Started on one last night (still needs the final stripe of white).

I'm a little closer to finishing the tanks, I'll add better pics once I complete them:

I think i got things almost completely finished (other than basing and adding those shields/icons). Here's a few more pics:

Looking good! I like the effect on the sword in that last picture.

Shouldn't you be evacuating right about now?

Not in the evacuation zone, so waiting it out. Should be okay. I hope you guys keep power on.

You sure are brave painting all that yellow!

Thanks -- I figured I was used to it after the Bretonnians. I'm trying red for a space marine biker army (the "Red Wings" ;D), and I feel way less competent with that.

And now for an army update: I spent a bit of time chopping up some leftover cork and balsa and came up with at little scene that I think could fit over my new Bret display board. Any thoughts? (the idea would be to paint the balsa wood bits to look like a metal deck -- I have some "diamond" plate that I can put over it (and may use that for the bases too).
