Trudging up the mountain of grey plastic

posted Nov 21, 2012 19:42:51 by FredrikErixon

So I guess most of us have been there one time or another, you just have to buy one more model and then you'll be set, you promise yourself that you will start painting, some time goes by and suddenly, madness! Unpainted and unopened boxes of minis everywhere you look.

That all to familiar feeling of being in to deep hits you and you start to slowly realize you have to do something about it, and this time there is no excuses. So you put on painting tabled and slowly but surely you start to whittle away at the mountain. At least that's what I try to do.

As you all can see, I have a lot of models to paint so I thought I might as well start with some of the more mundane stuff to get it out of the way. So while I listened to painting tabled today I started on these five little buggers

Yes, five mighty night goblins. And when the show was over they looked like this

As you can see I missed a few mold lines on the knuckles but since theres around 200 of these cute little guys I had little to no motivation to start filing them off when I had already started to paint them.
Anyway, I have 15 of them already done, except the base, but I still haven't figured out how to do that yet. Here's a pic of two of the finished gobbos:

Those fifteen goblins make up the entirety of my painted orcs and goblins army, but that doesn't mean that I haven't been painting.

I have two more armies besides the Orcs and Goblins, I have my lovely shining skavens:

no, they are not painted to the best of my ability but I would probably go insane if I had to spend more time than what I have done to get them to where they are, I painted 90 slaves for a tournament in a week and a half, I use a mix of skavens and goblins and so I usually equip them with shields since the majority of the models have it (we usually donĀ“t enforce strict WISYWIG and so we can usually get away with whatever the majority of a unit has equipped)

I also have a little force of painted Lizardmen. These are my favorite painted army and they take significantly longer to paint than anything else I have so it's nice to just speed paint some skavens in between.

Since this picture was taken I have added six more chameleon skinks and the three handlers to the other salamander.

"My mounted Scar-vet and five lizards riding lizards"

"Skink priests and some skinks"

And last but not least a blurry pic of some chameleon skinks

I also play Malifaux and have a good size guild crew (creative basing, I know :P)

and a few arcanists

So my goal for the remainder of the year, and in 2013, to paint more than I buy, hopefully I will make it but who knows :), maybe if I just buy one more box and then I'll paint them all!

The shading on the pink looks spot on - good work!

Thanks, I'm pretty satisfied with the result myself :)
I have started on one of the Ten thunder archers

He is still wet as you can see and I will go back over him once he is dry and touch up the edges and such before I start with the highlights, but that will have to wait. I'm off to a tournament on the 19th and I will bring guild and yesterday I got hold of some new Guild riflemen that I have assembled and primed

I hope I will get them done untill saturday but I probably won't be able to, I need two of them at least...

The first one is done, he lost his knife in the process of painting him but that will be glued on later
FredrikErixon said Jan 16, 2013 00:26:54
The Second one is done too, they paint up a lot faster than I thought wich is nice, I will probably get the third done before saturday :)

FredrikErixon said Jan 17, 2013 11:21:20
And the third is done, well in time for the tournament

And I even made a Oiran mercenary to add to my guild, might come in handy when you need to lure someone towards your lines. The moldline on her leg is actually almost invisible in real life, I didn't see it until I looked at the picture, somehow the camera picks up on it really well though wich is a shame.

Each Malifaux model you post is more unique than the last. I like the color choices here, but it looks like the purple could do with another highlight.

So I finally got something painted again. I made an additional highlight on the purple on the Oiran as you said Greg, turned out really nice. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of that but I have some of the archer that I continued on today.
He's almost done, just the bow and the quiver left but I'm having second thoughts about the hat, maybe it blends in to much with the rest of the model? What do you guys think?

And yes! Those trousers and his clothpiece under the helmet are actually white in real life :)
Greg2thePerson said Jan 24, 2013 11:40:07
Glad my suggestion for the purple turned out well. I think the hat needs to be a different color, it is blending in too much at the moment. Perhaps beige?

Yea I'll try that when I get home from work :). I'm sittning here listning to episode 33 when you talk about changing water and had a little chuckle to myself. I am so lazy when it comes to that so I usually change it once a week at most xD
FredrikErixon said Jan 24, 2013 22:36:30
And he is done! When I looked at the photo I noticed he had a brown spot on the white cloth under his hood, this has since been fixed with some layers of white on top

Started my last commission, an Exorcist
FredrikErixon said Jan 26, 2013 00:05:03
and now it's done, wasn't my intention since I should sleep, got work in the morning but hey, if you're on a roll it's best to just keep going

Haha, nice. I'm working models tonight as well. Got a lot of painting to get prepared for a GT next weekend.
I've said it before, but the more I see of the Malifaux models, the more I wish to acquire some. Do they produce any non-metal minis? Because that would seal the deal.
